'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' casts Michaela Coel in sequel - New York Post

“I May Destroy You” creator and star Michaela Coel has been cast in Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

According to Variety, Coel joined the production at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios, where director Ryan Coogler started production last month. The sequel will premiere in theaters on July 8, 2022.

Representatives for Marvel Studios and Coel did not immediately return requests for comment from The Post.

Just last week, London-born Coel, 33, was nominated for a 2021 Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her HBO series, which at least partly fictionalized her experience as a sexual assault survivor. (She was surprisingly snubbed by this year’s Golden Globes.) Her prior credits also include the series “Chewing Gum” and “Black Mirror,” as well as the 2017 film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Anticipation is high for the “Black Panther” sequel following the shocking death of the original’s star Chadwick Boseman, who died Aug. 28, 2020 of colon cancer. In the movie, he played King T’Challa, a role that will reportedly not be recast and also will not appear in CGI form in the upcoming installment.

“There’s only one Chadwick and he’s not with us,” Victoria Alonso, a Marvel Studios executive producer, told Argentinian newspaper Clarin last fall, according to a translation by the Wrap. “Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to history and what we do to honor this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, really.”

Other cast members include returning stars Letitia Wright, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett.

The follow-up is one of several projects in the works from Coogler, including a television series for Disney+.
