DMX’s ex-wife has paid tribute to the late rapper as her “best friend” and “mentor.”
Tashera Simmons — the mother of four of the New York rapper’s 15 kids — posted a tribute to her ex on Saturday in a photo montage that should have been a joyful celebration of her own 50th birthday.
“Happy 50th birthday to me,” she wrote on Instagram alongside emojis of a crying heart and a broken heart for her ex who died the previous day.
“Now I also celebrate my ex-husband, my best friend, my spiritual partner, my mentor,” she said of the rapper, who was also aged 50 when he died Friday in White Plains Hospital following a reported April 2 drug overdose that left him in a “vegetative state.”
“I also thank God for his life and his peace and his journey, and his life lessons that was passed on and that will live on for generations to come,” she said in a hushed voiceover during the video montage.
In her caption, Simmons said that she was “crying” over the “roller coaster of emotions” on her special day.
“I couldn’t bring myself to just celebrate and close the last 50yrs of my life with out celebrating the life of one of thee most important person in the world to me, my Ex-husband,” she wrote.
“I am so grateful to God and Honored from the bottom of my heart, for the opportunity while on this journey called life to join hands in marriage with a true disciple and Angel of God to do life with when we did,” she wrote along with a praying-hands emoji.
“Everything we went through was necessary. It made me the women I am today,” she wrote.
“Life is so fragile and special at the same time!”
Simmons was married to the rapper — real name Earl Simmons — from 1999 to 2014. They have four children together: Xavier, 28, Tacoma, 21, Sean, 18, and Praise Mary Ella, 15.
